Phase 3 - The Administration Building
Preserving Beauty, History, and Function
Nebraska Christian Schools' roots run deep in Central Nebraska, continuing a legacy of education in the area dating back to the construction of the iconic Administration Building in 1885. Over the last nearly 140 years, various educational institutions utilized this historic structure, starting with Nebraska Central College, which merged into what is today Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln, Nebraska. The campus laid dormant for multiple years but found new life in 1959 at Nebraska Christian Schools' founding. The Adminstration Building was then rightfully restored to its proper function and place as a symbol of Christian education in Central Nebraska, to be cherished by generations of students and community members.
Despite its historical significance, the Administration Building spent years at an impasse. The need for its recurring maintenance expenses often took a back seat to more immediate school requirements, leading to questions about its longevity and its future seat at the heart of campus. However, in February 2019, School and Foundation leadership decided to preserve this cherished structure.
The Administration Building Preservation Project was a joint effort between the Nebraska Christian Schools Foundation, the Nebraska Christian Schools Board of Education, and supportive alumni, aimed at addressing the most urgent needs of the building, beginning with the exterior. Work commenced in July 2019. The exterior was meticulously restored, including bolstering the building's foundation, new windows, and tuck-pointing all the brick. On the inside, crews hammered, drilled, and hauled literal tons of lath and plaster, gutting all three levels of the building. The outstanding bones now exposed, the interior of the garden and main levels were transformed and equipped into a modern, functional office and classroom space – a before and after better than all involved parties could have imagined.
The restoration and renovation of the Administration Building was completed in December of 2023, and the building is now, once again, the epicenter of campus activity. The Foundation has helped usher Nebraska Christian Schools into a new modern era both financially and infrastructurally. Each project undertaken ensures that the legacy of Christian education lives on, setting the course for generations to come.
